The child has one intuitive aim: self development

Dear St. Joseph Catholic School and Parish Community,

Since the events of October 30th surrounding the unapproved float that appeared in the Hanover Halloween Parade, I have spent a significant amount of time in prayer, reflection, and conversation with many of you. Before providing broader updates, I want to offer clarity on an important point.

After a thorough preliminary review, St. Joseph Catholic School affirms that the situation was not the result of any actions or decisions made by our teachers, staff, or students. Our educators and students acted responsibly and appropriately at every stage, and we want to make it clear that neither our school procedures nor the conduct of our school community contributed to this incident. The circumstances were the result of factors outside the school’s control, and we are actively cooperating with the relevant agencies to ensure this can never happen again.

We also stand united with all who have condemned the hateful symbolism that appeared due to the last-minute actions of an individual volunteer. That individual has been removed from all future events and programs. St. Joseph Catholic School remains committed to transparency, student safety, and maintaining a supportive learning environment, and we will continue to share updates as more information becomes available.

As many of you know, in the days following the incident, St. Joseph Catholic School experienced a wide range of emotions including sorrow, concern, frustration, and a deep sense of grief. I am thankful for the constructive and heartfelt conversations with our school parents during the November 4th town hall, as well as the compassion shown throughout our community as we worked quickly to prioritize safety and stability.

I am thankful to share that we have already completed several important milestones, including collaborating with the Diocese of Harrisburg, the Anti- Defamation League, and Jewish organizations who have generously stepped forward to support us in education, healing, and prevention.  Additionally, at a school level, we have upgraded many of our safety/security measures, conducted classroom lessons in preK-8th grade (We are safe and strong together: supporting our students during an emotional event in the community ), and we remain committed to continuing this important work with transparency and care.

In the coming months, we will be moving forward with more Holocaust and Jewish studies in our curriculum, working with our Jewish brothers and sisters on a community service project, and co-hosting an event that celebrates both Hanukkah and Catholic Christmas together. Each of these steps will help build a stronger foundation of historical awareness, cultural sensitivity, safety, and unity; ensuring that our response not only addresses the incident but strengthens our community for years to come.

I want to offer my sincere thanks to every parent, parishioner, faculty member, staff member, and volunteer for your patience, prayers, and support. Your willingness to stand together, to listen generously, and to focus on our shared mission has been a source of hope and encouragement during a very difficult moment.

As we enter the holiday season, may your homes be filled with peace, joy, and the comforting presence of Christ’s love. Please know of my continued prayers for you and my deep gratitude for the privilege of serving this remarkable community.

With appreciation and faith,
Principal Connahey
